Fire Weather Index app
In Tierra del Fuego, more and more people are engaging in recreational activities such as trekking, camping, cycling, etc. throughout the province. However, there is an important lack of knowledge of the fragility of the Fuegian environments on the part of the community.
One of the most important consequences of “bad practices” is forest fires, which in the province are always caused by human carelessness, as they cannot occur naturally due to weather conditions. In the last 10 years there has been a significant increase in the number of fire outbreaks caused by recreational activities.
To prevent fires, government agencies must implement a set of actions that include providing information, education and dissemination. In order to contribute to this process, we developed, together with the Environment and Sustainable Development Department, an app that helps the Government of Tierra del Fuego to inform about the fire risk index.
The app shows the sites where campfires are available, recommendations for lighting and extinguishing fires, etc. Similarly, the app includes the areas available for camping.
There is also information of interest about the protected areas of the province, with the objective of maintaining a proactive communication with the citizens and tourists who visit such natural environments.
The department can send messages to users to warn them about weather conditions, open or close seasons.
Protected areas and all other information capable of being geo-referenced (campfires, attractions, trails, etc.) can be displayed on a map available to the user even if he/she is not connected to the Internet. This, together with immersive 360º photos and videos in virtual reality, allows the user to feel a more enriching experience before physically visiting the destinations.
