National Parks Administration of Argentina

SIB is the “Sistema de Información de Biodiversidad” (Biodiversity Information System) of the National Parks Administration of Argentina. It is a database where official information on the species registered in the country’s protected areas is articulated, including not only texts but also images, videos, sounds and maps.

This national agency was created in 2002 to compile, classify and organize biological information on the species and protected areas of Argentina.

From 2013 to the present we have been working on different projects related to the SIB, such as the technological update of the web portal, the digitalization of processes such as sighting records, the implementation of an open mapping system, research permits, and much more.

National Parks Research Permit Manager

The development of the Research Permit Manager began in 2019, with the objective of modernizing and facilitating the process of authorization and management of scientific research within protected areas under the jurisdiction of the National Parks of Argentina Administration.

This comprehensive system allows researchers to virtually process the necessary authorizations to carry out their scientific and technical work in these areas. Through the platform, users can efficiently and transparently manage the permits required for their projects, ensuring compliance with conservation regulations and policies.

Information portal

We created an information portal for the Biodiversity Information System (or SIB for its Spanish acronym) that acts as a comprehensive and detailed database on national protected areas and nature reserves. This website provides comprehensive information on each protected area, including species cited, sightings by time of year, scientific research conducted, and cultural heritages present.

The website is designed to be a valuable tool for researchers, conservationists and the general public, providing access to accurate and up-to-date data on biodiversity and conservation efforts in Argentina. In addition to serving as an educational and research resource, the website also promotes awareness and appreciation for the country's natural and cultural richness, thus supporting the conservation of its biodiversity.

System for recording sightings in protected areas

For years, the National Parks Administration, through park rangers and specialized agents, has kept a record of sightings of species considered "special" within each protected area. Much of this information is publicly available in the SIB in the protected areas and species sheets.

To improve the mechanism for recording species, we developed a system for recording sightings that allows the digitization of the process. Through an application for phones, park rangers and National Park agents can send the data collected in the field directly to the database. One advantage of this system is that it can be used in places without connectivity, since the data is updated when there is a connection. The app also allows uploading photos and viewing their distribution on offline maps.
